]]>Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday replied to foreign representatives of the Global Young Leaders Dialogue (GYLD), expressing appreciation for their active visits to various parts of China to deepen their understanding of the country.
Just as you wrote in the letter, the Chinese people have built a rich and beautiful homeland, created a colorful culture, and realized their dream to live a well-off life, Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said in his reply to the representatives.
“China is a vast country with a large population. To develop and revitalize, the most important thing is to base it on national conditions and follow its own path,” Xi said, adding that the?new?Chinese path?to?modernization is getting wider and wider, and China will better develop itself and benefit the world.
Xi encouraged the young leaders to strengthen exchanges and mutual learning and contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind.
Recently, 36 foreign youth representatives from 28 countries wrote to Xi to congratulate the CPC on its 100th birthday, sharing their experiences and insights from their visits around China and expressing their hope of playing a bridge-building role to better promote exchanges and dialogue between China and other countries.
The GYLD is a program for young global?leaders initiated by the Chinese non-government think tank Center for China and Globalization (CCG) and the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies. It aims to develop a community to drive positive cross-cultural dialogue and communication for global opinion leaders from diverse regions, sectors, disciplines, cultures and professions.

]]>Participants to the forum also shared their stories in China and exchanged views on the strengths and responsibilities of young people in issues such as climate change and environmental protection, during the 2021 annual forum of the Global Young Leaders Dialogue (GYLD) on Thursday.
Sumayyah Hosany, a Mauritian doctor who is now working in China, shared her experience during China’s COVID-19 fight. “As an African youth and a doctor, I wanted to contribute my part in fighting COVID-19,” she said.
She also made short videos and posted them on social media platforms to introduce China’s experience in combating the virus to international netizens.
Du Zhanyuan, president of the China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, addressed the opening ceremony of the forum. “Young people shoulder the responsibilities in creating a better world and building a community with a shared future for humanity,” he said.
The forum was organized by the Center for China and Globalization and the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies. Around 140 guests from nearly 30 countries and regions attended the forum.

BRICS countries should join hands to innovate in governance and tackle common challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and alleviating poverty, experts said at a BRICS seminar.
Richard Levin, special master for labor tenants at the Land Claims Court in Randburg, South Africa, said at the BRICS Seminar on Governance and Cultural Exchange Forum 2020 that the COVID-19 pandemic has severely affected the world, and all countries need to make adjustments and work together to address global problems, such as poverty.
He added that China, South Africa and other African countries have always been committed to multilateralism and could play important roles in pushing forward the innovation of governance, and that he hopes BRICS countries-Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa-will gain larger voices in global governance.
Du Zhanyuan, president of China International Publishing Group, said that BRICS successfully evolved from a concept into an organization and it continues to develop, because BRICS countries represent emerging powers in the world. The countries have consistently put forward new ideas and solutions on major global issues from a new perspective to promote the development of global governance, Du said.
The BRICS mechanism is a product of innovation, he said, and should continue to be a source of innovation and play a more active role in leading the world out of difficulties.
Pavel Negoitsa, general director of the editorial office of the Rossiyskaya Gazeta newspaper, said that because of the COVID-19 pandemic, more people across the world will fall into poverty. China has made tremendous achievements in poverty alleviation in the past few decades and its experiences are worth learning from. He also suggested that BRICS countries hold a forum especially to share experiences of lifting people from poverty.
Cultural exchanges
People-to-people and cultural exchanges are also critical to BRICS countries. Chinese film director Lu Chuan previously organized the filming of Kids and Glory, the first documentary jointly produced and broadcast by BRICS countries. He said the film has been a cultural product and popular art form with people of all countries, and it could serve as an ambassador in international cultural exchanges.
Lu expected to make more jointly produced documentaries among BRICS countries in the future on a wide range of topics, including music, history, and literature.
More than 150 participants from BRICS countries participated in the seminar and forum on Thursday and Friday. The events were co-organized by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, China International Publishing Group, Guangming Daily, Rossiyskaya Gazeta and the Russia-China Friendship Association.

]]>Raffarin also noted that multilateralism needs to be reshaped and transformed to adapt to the current global situation, while multilateral institutions should be reformed to make world governance more efficient and regional. There is plenty of room for China and France to cooperate in the field of reforming multilateral institutions.
“A deep economic slump and financial crisis are unavoidable, but the trend of global peaceful development will not change due to the epidemic situation. The key question now is how to better maintain the peaceful development of the world – which will require the joint efforts of all the countries around the world,” he insisted.
Zhu stressed that the epidemic would have a considerable impact on globalization in four aspects: the security of industrial and supply chains, the relocation of health and pharmaceutical industries, the coordination of policies, and the development of the digital economy.
He urged countries around the world to stand united in preventing not only the virus but also economic depression.
Lalongde believes the best way to stabilize the global economy is to coordinate through international organizations and global thinks tanks. He also hopes this seminar will shed light on the future of sustainable development.
“Despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic, this could be an opportunity to create a new start for the world to get out of this crisis and turn to green development,” he suggested.
“Right now, despite the challenges caused by the epidemic, we must not stop our fight against climate change. I think we need to contribute more than ever to reduce carbon emissions,” he said.

]]>“The global spread of the coronavirus has demonstrated a lack of preparedness of both international and national health governance and control mechanisms,” said Alexander V. Lomanov, deputy director for the Scientific Work of Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations, part of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
“The renewal of global governance mechanisms is not possible without cooperation among the nations based on solidarity and responsibility,” he said. “It is obvious that without trust, it is impossible to find a common way out of the crisis created by the global problems of recent years and provoked by the pandemic.”
Lomanov was speaking at a subforum of the Global Think Tanks Online Forum on International Cooperation to Combat COVID-19, held in Beijing.
A thorough analysis of the experience in the virus fight is needed to develop new mechanisms for rapid global monitoring and a response to emerging infectious diseases, he said, adding that the role of major international organizations such as the World Health Organization in global health governance should not be undermined.
“Baseless accusations against China and the WHO destroy trust between countries and become an obstacle to uniting the efforts of all members of the world community,” he said. “Reform of the WHO can only be achieved by consensus among all members of the organization, and not by the will of one country that openly blackmails others by threatening to stop paying fees to the WHO budget.”
Yu Yunquan, president of the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies, said that international cooperation should be further intensified, with key international organizations such as the WHO as the link, to improve the world’s ability to handle major public health emergencies such as outbreaks of major infectious diseases.
Concerted efforts from various countries and regions are needed to solve problems such as a lack of a coordination mechanism for the international flow of medical resources in case of emergencies, improve international cooperation in scientific research while coping with public health emergencies and to reduce patent barriers, he said.
Meanwhile, a highly efficient international coordination mechanism for decision-making and implementation among different countries should be established for better global health governance, he said. “The current virus should not divide countries. It should unite countries and bound all human beings together,” said Alistair Michie, secretary general of the British East Asia Council.
“At an international level, unity is crucial to defeat global challenges that can only be resolved by nations collaborating with trust and goodwill,” Michie said.

]]>China has resolutely launched an all-out people’s war against the COVID-19 outbreak and succeeded in containing the spread of the virus. In this battle, China will always stand together with other countries, said an official with the State Council Information Office.
Many attendees called for candid and in-depth exchanges among global think tanks to contribute wisdom and energy to enhance international cooperation to fight the virus and promote global economic development.
The pandemic has brought a negative impact to global governance, and countries around the world should join hands in areas including economic recovery, vaccine research and development, environmental protection and digital governance, said attendees from Australia, Belgium, Croatia, the United States, South Africa and the World Trade Organization.
The online forum was jointly hosted by 10 think tanks around the world. A joint statement was released after the forum.
